Dr. Peter P. Huntington, September 18, 1935 - May 26, 2026, passed away peacefully at age 90 with his two sons by his side.
Peter lived a long, full and productive life marked by dedication to his profession, his family and his many interests. During his distinguished medical career as a beloved cardiologist, he received numerous professional honors and awards in recognition of his service and accomplishments.
In retirement, he remained active and continued to contribute to his Central New York community, earning additional recognition for his efforts while also becoming an accomplished painter. He approached every endeavor with energy, determination and attention to detail.
An avid gardener like his mother, Peter found great satisfaction in nurturing plants and creating beautiful outdoor spaces. He was a longtime member of the Men and Women’s Garden Club of Syracuse and volunteered at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo’s gardens for 20 years. He started the Zoo Crew, overseeing a sizable team of volunteer gardeners in creating and maintaining the zoo’s gardens. He was also a longtime steward of Tracy Lake in Tully, N.Y., his home of three decades.
Peter was born in Dublin, Ohio and grew up in coastal Maine and in Dublin, where he was a top student and star athlete at Dublin High School. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine degree. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center/College of Medicine.
Peter served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Japan, where he helped sick and injured troops during the Vietnam War. Soon after returning, he and his young family moved to Syracuse, N.Y., where he worked as a cardiologist for over 30 years.
Peter was a kind and gentle soul and a wonderful human being who had a profoundly positive impact on so many people. His family extends their gratitude to all who shared in Peter’s life and friendship over the years.
Peter was predeceased by his parents, John “Jack” and Mary Huntington, and his former wife Sylvia Huntington. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 36 years, Mary Huntington, of Florida; his sons Thomas Huntington (Kristen), of Vermont, and Theodore Huntington, of California; his brother, Christopher Huntington, of Nova Scotia; his nephew, Samuel Huntington, of Ohio; and his grandchildren, Oliver, Phineas and Vivian Huntington, of Vermont.
