Joseph AScala. Jr. passed away on Tuesday, April 17, after a courageous battle with cancer. The son of the late Joseph and Lillian Scala, Joe was born in Queens, NY and spent most of his adult life in Syracuse, NY. He received his undergraduate degree at C.W. Post College and his graduate degree from Cornell University.

Joe spent the majority of his career as a professor in the art school at Syracuse University and retired as Professor Emeritus. While at Syracuse University, he ran the Joe and Emily Lowe Art Gallery and the University’s Lubin House Gallery in New York City. Joe founded Collaborations in Art Science in Technology (CAST), a non-profit organization that funded artists who used technology in their art. Upon retiring from SU, Joe served as Executive Director of Stone Quarry Hill Art Park in Cazenovia and was most recently a real estate agent with HUNT Real Estate. Joe’s art is part of many collections, including the permanent collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His work has been displayed in galleries and museums across the country, and his writings have been published in catalogues and anthologies. He participated in many art lectures and received numerous awards and accolades.

Joe is survived by his wife Patsy, his daughter, Laura (Jeff Beaumont), and his brother Larry. There will be no calling hours, and a service celebrating Joe’s life will be held later in the spring. Donations may be made to Unity of Syracuse, 300 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13207 or Volunteers 4 Animals, PO Box 1621, Batavia, NY14021.

dear Patsy and family, I was very stunned this morning about reading of Joes passing.
It's been many years since I was at your home for tax purposes. While there Joe and you showed me some of his art work, I was very impressed with it. You both were very nice to me even when I asked personal and business questions because of the tax audit that was in progress. Sincere condolences to your and your family.

Patsy, I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I only saw him a couple of times but I remember how much he loved Wilda and that always made me like him. You and Laura are in my thoughts. Candy
