Joyce Leone Howes passed away on September 23 at the Loretto Nursing Home in Syracuse after a lengthy period of declining health; she was 72 years old. She was predeceased by her parents John M. and Phylis (Romano) Leone, and her beloved son Jason Andrew Howes. She was a kind and gentle person, who was loved by many. She “never met a stranger.” A strong animal advocate, she enjoyed her years-long volunteering for Wanderer’s Rest animal shelter, and her cat and dog companions from Patches to Charlie & Susie Q. She was a graduate of St. Anthony of Padua high school in Syracuse, and attended Onondaga Community College. She had been employed as a bank teller at the former Marine Midland Bank, and later on, by the YMCA afterschool program in the Syracuse school district. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Lisa Howes-Pijanowski and son-in-law Kurt Pijanowski; her siblings, David Summerfall Leone, Jane Josephine Leone, Dr. Michael Ralph Leone and wife, Virginia Leone, nephews John and Christopher Leone and their families. Also, her dear family friend Belinda Tambasco. Her family wishes to acknowledge their appreciation of the support and loving care provided by the Loretto Nursing Home in both the Fahey and Cunningham buildings and Dr. James Longo and his staff during her long illness. A memorial celebration service will be held on Friday Nov. 2, 2018 at 11am in the Loretto Nursing Home Cunningham Bldg Chapel, 700 E. Brighton Ave. Syracuse, NY. 13205 .
