Jane Mosher Heitzman

February 26, 2018

Jane Mosher Heitzman, 98, of Syracuse, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 26, 2018.

She was the devoted wife of the late George C. Heitzman, MD, for 30 years and was loved and cherished by all who knew her.

Born on Nov. 22, 1919, in Parish, N.Y., she was the daughter of R.C. and Florence (Foote) Mosher. In her youth, she sang at weddings, danced and loved all things theatrical, which led her to attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. Later, she managed the Arthur Murray dance studio in Syracuse, where she met Dr. Heitzman.

The couple married in 1947 and lived in many states and in France before resettling in Syracuse in 1957. She loved to entertain and surround herself with friends and relatives. She hosted warm, intimate gatherings that showcased her love of cooking, storytelling, art, music, fashion and fun. Jane and Dr. Heitzman went their separate ways after raising their children.

Jane’s “family” continued to grow.

“Crazy Jane,” as she liked to refer to herself, acquired another affectionate nickname, “Lady Jane,” later in life, as she became a universal mother and treasured friend to many.

She always had time to listen and counsel anyone seeking solace. Her favorite frame of mind was gratitude. She greeted every day with a smile and every evening with a thank-you.

She is survived by her children, George Jr. and Donna, both of Syracuse, Peter (Karen Savoca) of Munnsville, N.Y., and Jennifer (Paul Brown) of Cold Brook, N.Y.; granddaughters Eden Heitzman Skowronski (Artur) and Jacqueline Simcuski D’Ambrosio (Michael); great-grandchildren Zora, Magnar and Dragon Skowronski; a sister, Jeanette Mosher Gansert of Lakewood, Colo.; and sister-in-law, Virginia Mosher of Romeo, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Donald R. Mosher of Romeo, Mich.

A memorial service is planned for this spring and will be announced on this website. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hospice of Central New York.
